Founded by Robert D. Kern in 1959, Generac was originally called the Electric Controls Inc. and operated out of a rural Wisconsin garage. Building up from humble beginnings the company first started manufacturing out of a renovated dairy barn but quickly expanded. Generac developed the first affordable generators as well as a durable engine specifically designed for generator use. Portable generators became accessible across the country thanks to their long partnership with popular retailers. By the end of the 1980’s Generac also entered the commercial and industrial markets with an expanded line of products.
Today Generac is the leading maker of home standby generators including a wide range of products like portable generators, pressure washers, transfer switches and accessories.
Generac is committed to sustainability and works on developing environmentally responsible products and manufacturing processes. One example to Generac's commitment is the EcoGen home stand-by generator which is designed for off-grid emergency power back-up.
