Quality and longevity
Just bought this five days ago. Have already been using it on furniture I repair and rebuild. It meets all my expectations and is easy to use. Belts are easy to change and adjust

Excellent sander, but not perfect
There I was, looking at my 550sqft multi-level cedar deck with failing finish that I needed to strip and prep for re-coating. I looked over at my trusty handheld orbital 1/4 sheet sander and decided nope--if I wanted this job to take less than a summer of Sundays, I was going to need some belt power.

Got this Porter-Cable 352VS from CPO, picked up a bunch of 80-grit Diablo sanding belts and went to work. Wow, this thing is powerful--It really just stripped these boards beautifully and quickly. It took only 3 hours to strip the entire deck. It has a powerful motor and doesn't bog down even under a fair amount of pressure. It's quite heavy, guessing about 10 pounds give or take. The weight isn't too big a problem. It feels much heaver carrying it than it does during use and its weight keeps it on the work surface with little extra effort.

It's not perfect, though given this is the first belt sander I've used/owned I can't say that others wouldn't have these same flaws but here we go: First, when powered on, it blows air out from a vent on the front. However, it seems that the vent is angled somewhat toward the user/side, so you tend to get little hot bits of material shot out at you. Not really an issue as long as you wear eye protection (you remembered your eyes, right?!?) but occasionally my guiding hand gets a little hot fleck bouncing off it. Second, the electrical cable emerges almost horizontally. It would do well to have the electrical cable exiting the unit at an upward angle and have the reinforcement sheath extend longer than it does. When moving the sander back and forth, occasionally the cord just wants to get under the sander and interfere. If it just held itself up at either a taller angle or just held itself out farther, this wouldn't be an issue. Easy fix: get a 12" length of 1x2 wood, and Velcro tie it to the base of the cord and again at about 10" out from the base. Problem solved with scrap materials I had lying around anyway. Third issue (and I really can't blame the sander itself here because I'd suspect most belt sanders have this issue) but it's dang difficult to get the sanding right up against a vertical surface like a wall. Rotating the sander 90-degrees works, except that now you're sanding perpendicular to the grain rather than with it. So I did need to break out my trusty orbital for those tight spots.

All in all, this is a fantastic unit, and it turned a month-long project into a single weekend.

I can't speak to long-term reliability, as I only have about 3 hours of use on it. But it absolutely got the job done and I'm happy to keep this sander in my growing arsenal of household power tools.

Porter Cable Sanders are the best!
This is our second sander, (Porter Cable); our other one is always at the job site in use, and my husband will not let me borrow it --- SO, I bought this one for me. I do wish it were lighter, but it does an amazing job!

BEST ANSWER: The body of the sander is made of metal. The handle has a rubber grip.
