Don't judge a tool by its cover
I've been using my dad's Black & Decker worm drive, model 3051, since 1980. That saw was purchased in 1975 and has served us very well. Unfortunately, it finally kicked the bucket, so I decided to try this saw, since people said that it was very powerful and easy to use.

My initial thoughts:

The lower guard is attached well, and never jams up even on steep compound miter cuts, so I do not have to stop the work, pull the saw out, lift the guard, and then restart. This means that I would never have uneven cuts due to the guard getting caught. The dual-port rip guide is the best part about this saw. Much better than those flimsy "T"-shaped guides that other companies offer.

That is the good, now for the bad.

The motor is not designed well, and just like the Ridgid, it lacks sufficient power to cut very hard or thick wood. Your view for cutting was also much less than the old B&D, meaning you have a very narrow window to view your cutting line (bad blind spots). Even furthermore, a year went by and the saw stopped having power to cut, so I sent it to Dewalt, they said there was nothing wrong, that I must have put the blade (new Bosch daredevil 18 tooth 7-1/4 inch) on backwards. It still did not work, so I drained the oil and disassembled the saw, and I found out that the worm drive gear was stripped. I cannot imagine how cheap the metal must have been for the gears themselves to get stripped out like that. It was well oiled and cared for and under moderate use for that year, mostly woodworking and around-the-house projects. Most parts stores out there are out of stock on these gears. Guess why? Probably because lots of people are having this problem.

I thought that this saw would be an improvement to our B&D, and in some ways it certainly is. However in two of the most important areas it fails. There are much better worm-drives on the market. Skill, Makita, Bosch, and Ridgid. I found the Skill worm-drive saw to be the best value and way better than Dewalt. The SPT77WM-22 is lighter, more powerful (3.1 horsepower vs 2.8 on this saw and 2.6 HP on the MAG77LT and 2.5 HP on the Ridgid), cuts faster, does not bog down as much, and is much quieter, when compared to this saw. The guard is also just as smooth. The motor also stayed much cooler than the Dewalt. Makita's magnesium saw is in second place.

The Last Saw You Will Ever Buy
This saw is everything one would expect of a hypoid drive saw from DeWalt. The perfect torque transfer and high speed is the reason for buying a hypoid saw in the first place, however the solidity and balance is the reason for this owning this one. I fully expect some grandchild to make good use of it long after I am gone.

yupper....git R done !!
first needed a good dependable sidewinder, after a lot of touch and feel, and review's. I settled on the Dewalt 575sb over the makita 5007mga (needed a brake model). now having to make several long rip cut's,on thicker than ply wood. thought it better to add a worm-drive, once again looked at review's.however bottom line, from experience, swapped out 18 tooth blade for dewalt 40 tooth. my eyesight is no longer 10/20 it is now 20/35,and the blade being on left, made line of sight amazing !! my pencil line was gone !! jus gone !! the rip cut's in thicker wood were perfect !! although the worm-drive is heavier, once on the cutting surface, the center of gravity was nice, almost as easy as my sidewinder.

Good Saw
This saw is pretty solid. It is really not that heavy for something that can rip 3 sheets of osb in one pass without even bogging down. The only downside to the saw is it is loud. It has a strange grinding noise when it starts up that seems to become less frequent as it warms up with a little use. As plenty of others have stated, the saw was almost empty on oil when I received it so be sure to check your oil level right away. The oil was also very milky looking and appeared to be very old or something. It feels good in your hand and really shines when cutting plywood/osb. The extra weight keeps it from wandering and really tracks a nice straight line.

New Vs. Reconditioned

What's the difference between New and Factory-Reconditioned?

Factory-Reconditioned products have been returned to the manufacturer and are restored to like-new operating condition; they go through a rigorous testing and inspection process. Plus, they offer a significant savings vs. new.
  • Reconditioned products may have minor cosmetic blemishes or scratches that do not affect item performance.
  • Reconditioned products may not come with all of the consumables the new version comes with (bits, sanding pads/papers, cases, etc.).
  • Both come with a manufacturer warranty and are covered by our Money Back Guarantee; New is 30 days, Reconditioned is 60 days.
