The idea of the SawStop saw came to founder Steve Gass, in 1999. As amateur woodworker, with a Ph.D. in physics, he was very familiar with the dangers involved in operating a table saw and was inspired to develop new technology to improve safety.
The result was a saw with a safety system able to detect when the user comes in contact with the blade and then stops it within milliseconds. This is made possible by an electronic detection system that induces an electrical signal into the blade. If the signal changes due to contact with the human body, this change is detected and a brake quickly stops the blade in place, preventing serious injury to the user.
A few short years after presenting a prototype saw at the International Woodworking Machinery and Furniture Supply Fair in Atlanta, Georgia, the SawStop saw became a reality. By 2005, SawStop saws were in full production and today are a top selling table saw thanks to its one-of-a-kind safety innovation. SawStop offers a line of contractor, professional, and industrial cabinet saws as well as a line of accessories such as a fence and rail system to help make easy, accurate cuts and a dust collection system to keep the work area clean.
