Q:How do these items assist in cleaning the HWH? How often should the HWH be cleaned? What product is used to clean the heater?
A:The service valves allow for a quick connection from the water supply, to the pump you are using to clean the unit. Frequency of cleaning is going to vary by region and how "hard" the water is.
A:You buy a cheap, submersible pump. The input and outputs from this pump are connected to these fittings using washing machine hoses. The valves isolate the heater from your household plumbing. You submerge the pump in simple vinegar (about 2-gallons in a 5-gal bucket) to descale it, done annually or more often depending on your mineral makeup of the water. You might be able to come up with something to isolate the pump if you're a savvy plumber, but these make the task easy and drama free. A little pricey, but I would say compel eyelet necessary if you want the machine to last longer than a year.
