    not a bad unit

This unit saved us a lot of money over buying propane for a normal tank water heater. There are problems with element and haveing to be on the phone to diagnose problems. It would be nice if replacement parts were available at your local stores. But the first one lasted about 5 years going through 2 elements that Bosh warranty covered without problem before the last break down that I figured wasnt an element and would be too costly to fix so I replace it with a new Bosh hoping they improved some now a year later no problem yet.

Installed 1st in 2004 as primary water heater. Does great for about two years and fails. Bought one before knew about guareentee... but failures have recurred at two to three year intervals due to heating modules or circuit boards. Very frustrating, money saved likely not balanced by replacement expense, nuisance of replacement and not having hot water. Local electricians do not know how to service this unit. The old tank water heaters never fail this often. Service techs are ok, but a replacement electrical board is $170... not much less than an tank water heater and its cost is not included in the ten year element warranty. The unit draws 120 amps at full cycle so you really need residental service of 400 amps.

Bought 2 units for long home. Installed #1 and it didn't work. 45 minutes with tech support and they sent new second stage unit. Meanwhile I removed #1 and installed #2 unit. It worked great "out of the box". Replaced second stage in 1 and located it at other end of house. Still not working. Another 45 minutes with tech support and situation not resolved yet. When I advised that I had moved the unit they advised that I might have cancelled their warranty because I " moved the unit". Asked if I could send the unit to a repair facility, have it tested and repaired. They advised that there is no such facility in the US. What? Not a happy camper! Meanwhile #2 unit is working just fine and produces all the hot water I need on that end of the house.

we bought this to replace our old water heater and thought we'd save money on electricity. That didn't happen, nor did the [$] unit ever work very well. We were constantly going up to the attic, climbing over the A/C unit and having to reset the unit....sometimes more than once a day. Sometimes I just took a cold bath so I wouldn't have to go in the attic at night. After the initial cost for a plumber and electician (this cost us over $1000 post Katrina), we then had an electrician come back and install a new electric circuit box just for this unit...didn't really help. Now 5 years after this big expense, it stopped working and we're told it can't be fixed. Going back to the old type hot water heater, and looking forward to hot baths every night. Anyone need a boat anchor?

              Best Uses

Bought AE125 Whole House Electric Tankless Water Heater for vacation home that gets left vacant often. No tank-no freezeups, no heating water while away. Very good.

Problem is hard water. Scale builds up on the heat elements, reducing effeciency until unit fails. Water softeners add salt, which also can build up in the unit. Looking for solutions to this. Either frequent cleaning (how?), or a reverse osmosis water conditioner.

Check your water hardness before buying!
