I am a custom cabinet and furniture maker and needed a step up from my drill press mortiser. The Powermatic is a very solid machine . It sets up easily and cuts very true and smooth especially with the new chisels. The only problem I had was concealed damage. While the unit is well packed, it had been dropped on the top and had bent the cooling fan and the fan housing. I called CPO and they asked me to forward the serial # to them and they would forward it to Powermatic. I said that it was not necessary to send the entire unit back and that I could just replace the damaged parts if they would send them to me. It seemd crazy to have them incur the expense of complete replacement for an easily replaced part. CPO doesn't deal with parts and they said it was Powermatic's responsibility. Needleee to say, I've never heard from anyone. I took a hammer and block of wood and pounded out the fan housing as best as I could, straightened the bent fins on the fan and dropped the fan down 1/4" so it wouldn't rub. It runs great but I still notice the bent housing. Not great customer service.
Took just a few minutes to setup. It does seem that the chisel to bitt clearance set by the gauges on the machine may be too much for clean holes to the bottom of the mortice. I've just finished one small red oak table (28 Mortise and tenon joints), and the machine worked well. I did have to clean out several of the mortices because they didn't cut all the way to the bottom (the problem is easily fixed by just cutting the mortice a little deeper, etc.)
Easy to set up. Very well made for the cost. Great customer service, and shipping.
So far, it's worked exactly as I expected.
Makes precise, repeatable mortises in hardwoods with bits ranging from 1/4" to 1/2". Good leverage on handle and heavy construction for vibration-free stability.
