Comments about 1/4 in. Mortise Chisel and Bit:

I bought an expensive set of mortise chisels but the 5/8" shank would not fit in the Powermatic 5/8" bushing, so I bought a Powermatic mortise chisel. The first surprise I got was the Powermatic mortise chisel has a 3/4" shank which is bigger, beefier and more stable. The shank fits into the 3/4" bushing perfectly. It slides in easily but is very tight with no play or slack, so no run out. This results in a much better mortise with tighter fitting tenons. The auger is excellent and the stem long, which is perfect for easy use. The steel is hardened and I expect the edge on the mortise chisel will last a long time. Overall I am very satisfied with the quality, 3/4" shank, and long stem on the auger. I contacted my local machine shop and they suggested turning the 5/8" shanks with an emery cloth, which might work perfectly, however, I am going to buy Powermatic mortise chisels from now on for my Powermatic mortiser so I can avoid an unnecessary trip to the local machine shop.

It cost me about $18 to find out that this mortising chisel did not fit my new Delta machine. Nowhere did I find a shank size in the description of the chisel or in the decription of the machine
