This unit has worked well for my work as an electrician. I use the entire Porter Cable line. Cost to value is a real plus.
Comments about Tradesman 18V Cordless Hammer Drill Kit:
I have had this drill for over 3 years and I highly recommend it. This drill is lower priced than a Milwaukee or a Ridgid; it is also larger and much heavier than a Milwaukee or Ridgid, which can make overhead projects a bit difficult when you have to hold it up for extended periods. However, that does makes up for my lack of weight-room time, so it works out ok (no pun intended).
Some guys don't like the weight, but I myself find that the weight steadies the tool, much like a heavier circular saw will do. The heaviness of this drill also makes it sort of a B-17 Bomber: this thing will take an absolute beating and will never fail to get the job done. I've dropped this thing from heights of 10 feet frequently (not on purpose) and nothing more than a scuff marks to show for it; no dents, no dings, no scratches, and no performance variations. The weight and subsequent size of this drill DO make it somewhat difficult to maneuver in a tight or awkward place, so if over 50% of your work is done in these situations you may be better off getting a smaller Milwaukee or Ridgid, but I bought a right angle extension and a flex bit and that solved 99% of my space issues.
The speed and torque if this drill is also among the best. The torque at high settings is extremely efficient, and when it is put in second gear from the gearbox located on the top, it is blazing fast. I was at a friend's place helping him with a job and he had a spare Dewalt Lithium-Ion hammer-drill that was practically new. I couldn't stand it; not only did it feel like a kids toy (which it may as well be), it was under-torqued and under-powered compared to my Porter Cable. I drove the 15 minutes back to my house, got my Porter Cable, and finished the job in half the time. The speed of this drill in 2nd gear easily rivals that of the Ridgid Lith-Ion hammer drill (with LED worklight) which is 70 bucks more than the Porter Cable.
As far as Lith-Ion vs. NiCad, when this drill was new I would put a fresh battery on and it lasted me at least half the day, and that was when I was building my wife a new closet and the drill was under constant use and strain. The Lithium Ion does last longer, but since this drill came with 2 batteries it didn't matter much to me; just charge one while you use the other. They need replacing after a few years, but pretty much all NiCads do.
The hammer function is extremely efficient the few times I used it, but for most of my heavy concrete drilling I use a Makita rotary hammer so I don't use it as much as I used to for that purpose.
All in all this drill is every bit as reliable and high quality as a 2-300 dollar Milwaukee or Ridgid and I believe I paid somewhere around 130 bucks for it.
I've been a Generial Contractor for 36 years. I have used many Good tools from other manufactures, but Porter Cable is top self. My Porter Cable Tradesman 18V Cordless Hammer drill Kit is GREAT.
The good news is you can use Nicad or Lithium Batteries. You will not be Disapointed.
Have had limited use of tool, only had a few weeks, but the few times I have used it, works GREAT and makes the job a lot easier.
This is my first hammer drill. Am impressed with the amount of power. Ordered to drill some holes in a concrete slab for bolting a sill plate of a bathroom remodel. Managed the job with this drill and this was some hard concrete. Just wish the batteries lasted a bit longer for purposes of drilling. One 4" hole would take about a full battery charge. Maybe 10 minutes total drilling time. Granted this is on the hammer setting and full speed. Just means some waiting and charging. Good there are two batteries. Good for the price.
