What will cut tree roots imbedded with dirt and maybe rocks?

Using a powerful 10 amp corded sawzsall with a 12" pruning blade really worked for me to remove eleven juniper stumps here in Albuquerque. Some of the roots were 6 inches in diameter. A battery operated sawzall might survive one or two stumps if the roots aren't very thick, or you take your time.

I would suggest and axe or a maul for your application. A sawzall could work, but you would need to dig up everything around the root.
