Measuring tools cover a full gamut of measuring equipment- from complex laser measuring tools to simple tape measurers and wheels. Determining what your measuring needs are is the first step to finding the correct measuring tool. Below are some quick descriptions for the types of measuring tools we offer:
Line and Dot Lasers
Line and dot lasers can project vertical and horizontal lines as well as points. Most line and dot lasers are self-leveling and are used most often by plumbers, electricians, and carpenters. Common uses include installation of lighting, tiling, power sockets, and cabinets.
Laser detectors work in conjunction with line and rotary lasers to ensure your desired marks are level. A laser detector is essential for outdoor use because lasers cannot be easily seen in the daylight. There are separate detectors for red and green lasers, so it's important you select the right detector. Laser detectors often emit a sound and/or have a digital display to indicate if your mark is level.
Distance lasers or distance meters are handheld devices and can measure lengths, volumes, and squares. Some distance lasers are equipped with Bluetooth and can measure lengths of over 800 feet. One important feature to look for is a Pythagorean function, which can make indirect length calculations of distances that otherwise, cannot be measured directly. This makes measurements possible in inaccessible positions or in areas where there is an obstruction or a lack of a reflective surface. Distance lasers are used in construction, window/skylight installation, and interior design.
As the name implies, rotary lasers rotate 360 degrees to produce a level laser line around a worksite. Some rotary lasers are strictly for indoor use while others can be used both indoor and outdoor. Rotary lasers can be divided into manual-leveling or automatic-leveling types. Some uses include concrete pouring, foundation construction, site grading, and installing fences or chair rails.
Measuring Wheels & Measuring Tapes
Measuring wheels measure distances using a revolving wheel and a counter. Measuring wheels are ideal for commercial or residential use and are available with imperial or metric measurements. Consider smaller diameter wheels for indoor applications such as making carpet or tile estimates and larger diameter wheels for outdoor applications such as land surveying or making lawn care estimates such as seed and fertilizer estimates.
Tape measures have linear measurements markings on them, available in imperial or metric units. They can be made from different materials, from plastic to steel, and have different measurement capacities. Choose from 15 foot to 300 foot capacities for in shop applications to outdoor or construction applications.
Hand Levels & Layout Tools
Hand levels are manual levels that utilize the classic bubble level to help determine whether or not a work surface is level (horizontal) or plumb (vertical). Some hand levels may also be equipped with digital read outs to report precise measurements.
Layout tools like the rafter angle square are used to measure and mark lines for perpendicular or angled cuts on lumber used for roofs, stairways, decks, patios and other constructions. The embedded measurement markings and degree graduations make the angle square an ideal measuring tool for layouts.
