This rotary hammer was just like brand new. It looked felt and even smelled like brand new even though it said reconditioned. The only way to tell the difference is the tag on the case.

This reconditioned product caught my eye due to the low price from CPO. I received the tool and it looked brand new! Even more important it ran like it was brand new too!

This is the fastest drilling rotary hammer that I have ever used!

          I highly recommend!

          A good hammer

          • Clumsy Side Handle

          Best Uses

          • Awkward Angles
          • Drilling For Anchors
          • Frequent Use
          • Small Jobs

I purchased this hammer to drill lots of holes for anchors in concrete, the occasional inch-plus hole for conduit penetrations, plus a little chipping here and there. This Makita seems like it will handle that just fine, though I have not drilled a hole larger than 1/2 inch diameter yet.

Some things that aren't so great:

The side handle and depth gauge are kind of clumsy. You can't just loosen the handle, rotate it to the angle you want, and then tighten it up again. Well, sort of, but the side handle assembly rides on a series of notches on the body of the tool, and when you loosen the handle to rotate it (as you would with almost any other rotary hammer), the handle doesn't rotate smoothly. So you loosen it more, and then it is too loose and falls out of alignment. Kind of clumsy.

Also, the depth gauge gets in the way of rotating the side handle. Like I say, kind of clumsy.

On the whole, the tool has a vague feel of being made of pretty plastic stuff covering up rough-fitted metal. (I use Makita LXT litium-ion drills and impact drivers, and they feel as precise as surgical instruments to me, in comparison with this one.) It doesn't seem to be the height of Makita's engineering expertise.

It does not have the power to truly excel as a chipping or breaking hammer. However, that's not what you use this kind of tool for.

So that's what isn't so great. Now I will tell you what I like about it.

I like that it is light enough and compact enough to use overhead, for extended periods. It really is.

It takes a while to get much done when chipping or breaking. But, it is right at home making 1/2 inch holes. It takes maybe 15 seconds to shoot a 1/2 inch hole six inches deep. I have not made holes larger than 1/2 inch, so we'll see about that.

The chuck is compact and really easy to use.

I like the way the drill/hammer selector works. It turns easy enough, feels precise. If you are going to be chiseling, you can align the chisel the way you prefer, then move the selector to hammer-only, and hammer away. Works fine.

The variable-speed trigger works great. It does not give you full-power hammer-blows when running at low speed, which is nice for starting holes out, so you don't bounce all over the place and make moon-craters out of what you're drilling.

It has an LED light on the front of the motor housing that helps... some.

The rear handle has some anti-vibration cushioning which does help.

The cord is pretty long. It has a ferrite thing on it to reduce the interference it would otherwise produce. It can get caught on things if you're not careful.

The price and shipping cost from CPO on this tool was fabulous. I bought a reconditioned unit, and it may as well have been new.

          I would buy another one.

          New Vs. Reconditioned

Factory-Reconditioned products have been returned to the manufacturer and are restored to like-new operating condition; they go through a rigorous testing and inspection process. Plus, they offer a significant savings vs. new.

          • Reconditioned products may have minor cosmetic blemishes or scratches that do not affect item performance.
          • Reconditioned products may not come with all of the consumables the new version comes with (bits, sanding pads/papers, cases, etc.).
          • Both come with a manufacturer warranty and are covered by our Money Back Guarantee;
New is 30 days, Reconditioned is 60 days.
