Great Hammer Drill for the money
The Makita was easy to use and powerful enough to drill into pressure treated lumber with minimal effort. It has a great ergonomic fit.

Good short term
Drilled two holes without problem, one into limestone and the second into concrete block then it quit. No burnng odors, no sound of stripped gears or bad bearings, it just quit. Now to see how well warranty repair works.

Easy To Use
Great buy on a powerful hammer drill.
I have only had this drill for a week, but I used it to easily drill into brick so I could mount an American flag on my home. The drill worked really well.

Ergonomic Design
wouldn't Know it is a Reconditioned Tool
I liked this drill motor so much I purchased another for my second home. A great powerful, large capacity tool that can be used as a regular and hammer drill. This is not my primary drill. I use a compact battery, adjustable driver/drill most of the time. But when I need the larger hole drilled or when working w/ concreat, this is what I use.

expectations met so far
Front handle gives the drill a good balance and control of the unit. Variable speed and reverse also add to the versatility. Has a nice torque band and since I am an advocate of duribility, the drill has so far met all my expectations.

BEST ANSWER: The HP1640 is not an SDS style drill. It has a keyed chuck and accepts common smooth shank bits

New Vs. Reconditioned

What's the difference between New and Factory-Reconditioned?

Factory-Reconditioned products have been returned to the manufacturer and are restored to like-new operating condition; they go through a rigorous testing and inspection process. Plus, they offer a significant savings vs. new.
  • Reconditioned products may have minor cosmetic blemishes or scratches that do not affect item performance.
  • Reconditioned products may not come with all of the consumables the new version comes with (bits, sanding pads/papers, cases, etc.).
  • Both come with a manufacturer warranty and are covered by our Money Back Guarantee; New is 30 days, Reconditioned is 60 days.
