Makita Makes a Mistaka
I purchased the Makita AF505 as a direct replacement for my old Makita AF503 that just plain wore out after several years of use in the trade. Given the performance of my old Makita, there was no hesitation replacing it with Makita's newer version, the AF505. The tool still offers ease of use and quick change-over from one brad size to another; 5/8" up to 2". I really like the new quick release cam-lock that enables you to quickly and easily clear jammed nails, minimizing downtime. What I didn't like is the cost-cutting that went into the redesign of the magazine. Time will tell, but I have the sense the tool may not last as long as my old tool. My biggest gripe is the 1/4" ports on the side of the magazine, through which you are suppose to keep an eye on you nail supply…if you hold the tool a certain way so you can see into the ports. The old tool provided a wide window that allowed you to keep an eye on nails remaining while using the tool. And the old tool would sense when you ran out of nails and stop firing. The Makita AF505 will keep firing even when there are no nails to fire. That means if you are concentrating on your work and not babysitting the tool, you might fire the tool four or five times before you realize it is not firing any brads, just denting your wood. The tool works as advertised…just not as good as the tool it replaced.

This doesn't live up to Makitas reputation
You want a tool that is streamline. My biggest complaint with this tool is that it had a large clunky nose. It is difficult to place a precision shot with this gun. My other complaint is that this gun is larger than others.
