This Hitachi Router is absolutely great. I have been looking at a number of Routers for some time and finally decided on the Hitachi. The best decision. It has plenty of power, soft start, light weight, easy to control and great grip. Chuck holds 1/2 bits very tight and needed to use a flat head screw driver with a small amount of pressure to get it out - but not a big deal. I would highly recommend this router to beginners up to professionals.
Nice looking tool.
Got a second base and mounted to my router table. It has been easy to use and quiet - a great purchase.
Overall this seems like a pretty good router depending on the application. Router bit removal and installation is a bit awkward you need to remove the motor housing from the base to change bits. I don't know if that is the norm for all routers my Craftsman has a shaft lock which makes it pretty easy. Here is the big caution for use with dovetails & template guides...the collet nut is 4 sided but not the full height of the nut so when you install the guide it covers up the flat side of the collet where you need to put the wrench to tighten the bit when you lower the motor on the base. If the flat side of the collet nut was the full height of the nut it would not be a problem. I asked a carpenter friend of mine and he could not offer a solution and neither could Rockler who made the dovetail jig. Bill (from Rockler) said it was the first time he had heard of this problem. Anyway for the price it seems like a great router just need to know what you want to use it for before you buy it I guess.
I use this router in my router table and it seems excellent in that application. I have not had it long so have only had one job for it. I cut some large cove molding with no problems. It did not chatter and had plenty of power to handle the cut although I did make two passes just to be sure of ending with a smooth finish. The variable speed was an important feature for the large bit I was using. Although I do not have router lift for the table, the controls were as convenient as could be expected. I found the instructions for base removal not clear.
