I really like the fact that it uses the batteries from my Hitachi 18v drill. Turns out, the trimmer is really awesome for being battery powered (kill one battery and you'll need a beer anyhow). I like 'man' tools and surely this doesn't count as one, but my wife and kids now helping trim our 3 acre yard. It's a great tool and I'm already over the fact that I look like a yuppie while I'm using it... no noise, no smoke.
I must say, I was really impressed with this Trimmer. I used to own a Landscape Maintenance business so my expectations were fairly high. This trimmer exceeded them. I live on 5/8 of an acre with a higher than usual amount of Trimming to do for this size lot, including about 100 feet of stone border beds.
The Trimmer of course comes with a 3Ah lithium Ion Battery. I have a Number of Hitachi Tools that use the same battery configuration, one of the reasons I ordered this trimmer actually. I took the 1.5 Ah battery off my Hitachi Cordless drill (I've had it for two years, use almost daily, and love it) and figured I'd try the trimmer out while the big battery charged.
Well the 2 year old 1.5 Ah battery did the entire lawn, AND my neighbors yard. Plenty of power, and even did a decent job edging a short segment of sidewalk we have that hadn't been edged since last season. (I prefer "an actual edger" to do this, but wanted to see how it did) It did easily as good as my gas weedeater. Handles tall grass very well too, particualrly for a single line trimmer.
I've seen some reviews that have concerns about the weight, but really, if a trimmer is too light, it's actually more difficult to control. The balance is excellent, something I was concerned about, since the motor is in the head of the Trimmer. It's not a cheap universal motor either and the head, despite containing the surprisingly powerful motor, isn't realy any taller or larger than the head of a gas trimmer. So far, I can't really find anything to fault with this piece of equipment, or ANY HItachi Equipment I own, which includes a circular saw, two cordless drills, and orbital sander, and a compressor.
Just like every hitachi product I've ever used-terrific-I own a lot of hitachi products from air powered nailers ,cordless drills ,saws down to even a "dremel' type mini grinder(which whips all those type grinders) and now my string trimmer-which i really like-balanced light weght and long lasting battery-great product for grass and medium sized weeds
