Good bang for the buck—minor recon issue
I have an Hitachi 10" at home in IA, but am spending a lot of time in ME and needed a saw for small projects. I wanted to spend as little as possible and have had good experience with the Ryobi brand. In general this seems to be a nicely made tool. It was a little more used looking that other tools I've gotten from CPO, mainly some soiling on knobs etc. The blade had a carbide tooth missing, but I can live with that until I get a new one. 7 1/4" blade are relatively cheap.

The bevel knob was slipping on its shaft and I had problems tightening and loosening it. The previous owner was probably a sumo wrestler. I contacted Ryobi and they said the saw was new on the market and parts weren't available yet--they would send me one when they were available. That didn't help much so I ordered the same part from the old blue model online. It was only a buck. I have to say that is cheap for a part and will probably work on this saw as they don't seem much different. That still meant a wait of a week or more, so I drilled an 1/8" hole in the knob and shaft and inserted a roll pin. That seems to work fine. Funny thing is, the smaller knob on the vice attachment already has a roll pin. So that was a bit of a hassle, but I don't really mind as I am retired. After all this is recon, and these days you often have to fix or modify brand new items before you can use them properly.

There is a small but acceptable amount of sideways play in the blade. The bevel stop screws seem loose and probably won't hold a setting forever. They don't even tell you they exist in the manual. When you lock the miter setting the right side of the circular table raises slightly, but again it is within acceptable limits. The laser had to be adjusted. Note that if it is too far to the right it won't even shine on the work as the blade is in the way. At first I thought it was broken, but I moved it to the left with the adjustment screw and it was fine. There is a skew adjustment that you may have to make that they don't tell you about. You have to take the laser cover off to access it and it is pretty obvious. The main difference between this and the older blue model seems to be the position of the laser. This one is up front, probable to keep it out of the way of flying sawdust. By the way the dust collection is pretty good for a miter saw. The 1-1/4" dust port is about a sixteenth big and doesn't fit my vac properly.

Of course, at this price and with this compactness you sacrifice capacity. Basically, 2x4 is the limit and you can't even cut that a 45 degree miter. You could certainly do a 2x8 if you flip and do two cuts, maybe even a 2x10 (9.25") because of blade arc. In all I am happy with this. I've used a radial arm saw all my life and compared to that any chop saw is a little lame in terms of its versatility and capability, but for some reason radials have fallen from popularity. This meets my immediate need. If you are looking for something more versatile for finish work look into the Skil flooring saw. It cuts very wide stock and it rips. I got one of those from CPO last year but my daughter has it now. She is building a tiny house. Maybe I'll swap this with her. The Skil won't cut 2x stock.

I've dwelled on the flaws but the bottom line is this good little saw for the money.

Good value for the money
Bought this saw for on-site trim and light framing work. Works well in the shop for quick cuts that don't require the big miter saw. As it came, the saw was in excellent shape, requiring minimum setup. Never could get the laser to work, however. Even with the instructions from previous users, beam never got to where it should be and hit the blade, not the work. That's OK, that wasn't the reason I bought the saw.
Cuts are clean and accurate. Saw is wonderfully portable. Works for me.

I am looking for a light duty electric mitre saw for small trim and framing projects. This seems to be a good fit and I was wondering what type of blade you would recommend for clean/precise cuts? I would assume a carbide blade would work well?
