Comments about 165 ft. Cordless Laser Distance Meter:

I bought this thinking it could replace my old, tired, and broken measuring wheel. For the first time in my 100 or so purchases of Bosch tools, appliances, and auto parts, I was disappointed.

I am a commercial and residential painting contractor. I need to measure lengths, widths, and heights if building exteriors, screen walls, light poles, railings, fences, gates, etc.

The first general difficulty is that the unit must be physically placed at one end of the measurement. This is uaually easy inside but creates quite a challenge outside. You must come up with some kind of a "target" for the laser to hit at the other end that is far enough away from the wall so the laser doesn't hit anything along the way.

Measuring interior walls & ceilings seems to be easy and accurate. easy to see the laser. I haven't tried to do cubic feet or cumulating measurements yet, but I'm sure they are easy with a little reading and practice. Getting heights through triagulation is pretty easy and accurate. Haven't used it over 75 feet yet, but laser is easy to see indoors during the day.

Exterior use is a whole different deal. They might as well say "not for use outside during daylight hours" I also own a Bosch cross level laser and it is about the same but not as bad (there was a warning on that laser that is wasn't recommended for exterior daytime use). I am in Arizona so the sun might be a little brighter here, but the laser was not visable past about 10 feet. I see some manufactures make glasses to see the laser better so I may try them.

Most of the manufactures of firearm optics recommend green lasers for daylight use. I called Bosch prior to purchasing this unit and asked them about a different color laser and they felt the green was worse in the daylight. Not ownining a green laser yet, I am not sure who is right.

Anyway, If you are working inside and can physically place the unit at one end of your measurement (in the corner of a wall to measure or on the floor to measure ceiling height) and have a clear shot to the end of your measurement, this unit is fast, easy and accurate.

If you are working outside during daylight hours, things become more difficult as the laser must hit a target at the other end and you have to be able to see it hit the target. I tried to use sone survey stakes to measure a building that was about 50 feet long and could nor see the laser hit the target from the starting point. you have to stay on the laser when doing the measurement as you only have so long to aquire the target before the unit gives you an error reading.

I am not above believing that I am not doing this right. I copied the pages from the instructions as the numbered diagrams for the buttons ar on two different pages and the list of what the numbers/letters on the diagram indicate is on a third page to save flipping back and forth to three different pages to see what the instruction were trying to tell me to do. I read the booklet and added in my experience over 50 years of using hundreds if different tools (25 or so Bosch!) and this is what I came up with. I realize that Bosch recommends a different laser for outside use that is over $300.00. This is not an inexpensive unit so I expected a little bette performance out of it or atleast a warning that it was for inside only or not recommended for exterior use.

Comments about Bosch 165 ft. Cordless Laser Distance Meter:

I recently bought the GLM 50 for a specific job. Before bidding I needed to measure each room in a large commercial property, some of which were much longer than any tape measure I own. This laser distance measurer worked flawlessly...just aim and read the display. That's it. It really is that simple. The more advanced features are straight forward as well as the display makes it clear which value you are inputting. It seems to be built very well. Adding a back-lit display seems like something you wouldn't necessarily need, but after having the feature, I wouldn't be able to live without it. If I had to choose something to improve it would be the carrying case. It is snug around the unit and requires two hands to push the measurer in. (but it won't fall out!) I would also prefer a clip like a tape measure has on the back instead of a velcro strap that must be hooked around a belt. Neither of these case related issues alter my opinion of the purchase though, but they are minor complaints.

          Questions & Answers

          New Vs. Reconditioned

What's the difference between New and Factory-Reconditioned?

Factory-Reconditioned products have been returned to the manufacturer and are restored to like-new operating condition; they go through a rigorous testing and inspection process. Plus, they offer a significant savings vs. new.
          • Reconditioned products may have minor cosmetic blemishes or scratches that do not affect item performance.
          • Reconditioned products may not come with all of the consumables the new version comes with (bits, sanding pads/papers, cases, etc.).
          • Both come with a manufacturer warranty and are covered by our Money Back Guarantee; New is 30 days, Reconditioned is 60 days.
