    Comments about 13-in Thickness Planer:

Bought the 22-590 to replace my 22-580 that I lost in a shop fire. When making a light pass with the very first board ever put through it (first pass, also); the machine made a funny grinding noise, then I smelled burnt rubber, and the board stopped. Upon inspection I found the drive belt shredded and the cover for the belt assembly melted. I called Delta and they referred me to a local service center (unit has a 5yr warranty) to repair the item under warranty. Over six weeks later it still sits in their shop. This problem, evidently, is occurring so much in the 22-590 that no one can get the belts or even the cover assemblies in, because Delta can't keep enough in stock. I miss my 22-580 (it was chain driven).
Until Delta proves it can overcome this problem or changes their design, I cannot recommend this item. I can not attest to the quality of the planing function of the unit....because it couldn't hold together long enough to plane even one board.

          Worth the time and money?

          Comments about 13-in Thickness Planer:

When this works it is simply amazing! It planes hard and soft woods with an excellent finish; especially when taking off 1/64th" inch at a time.

Powers through even mahogany, red oak, and curly / hard maple with no problems! It does awesome job planing everything up to 12" wide with ease.

The only major Fallback on this whole product are these simple problems:

          1) Kevlar V Belts split or fall apart quite easily with only a few uses and only a few hours of use.

          2) The belts coming apart ruins and melts the belt guard constantly. The belt guard being made of plastic; thereby making it easily ruined when belts break at such high RPMs.

          3) Ruined belts and belt guards demand that you not only replace the belt, but the plastic belt guard as well every time as they can conflict with new belts movement.

          4) These 2 simple parts are ALWAYS back ordered by Delta/Porter Cable.

So my suggestion is that you might as well not go with this model.

I have only owned mine for 3 months. It broke the first time I used it (belt was installed in factory backwards. Yes! Backwards if you can believe that!) And it also broke another belt (ruining belt guard as well) the second time I used it with the replacement parts I got under the warrantee. So it has sat for the last 10 weeks broken waiting on back-ordered parts I cannot find anywhere.

            Comments about 13-in Thickness Planer:

I used a Ridgid 13" planer in my shop at work before retiring 4 years ago, and I almost bought another before doing internet research on the newer Delta 22-590. This new machine in my home workshop easily bests the Ridgid. The in/out feed tables were spot on from the factory, and leaves absolutely no snipe going in or coming out, something I could never quite adjust out with the Ridgid. I have been machining mostly aldler and hard maple, and am thrilled at the cut quality. I have been disappointed in the past in the way I felt Delta was slipping in quality, at least with consumer grade machines, but this planer is top notch. No disappointment here!

                Q:

My Benchtop planer is cutting very rough on one side consistently. it acts as if the knifes are dull. However I have changed the knives 3 times and know that is not the case. one side works very well while the other side is super rough. someone said that it may be the bearings . how do I check and what do I do? also I may like to upgrage to a segmented cutting head how does that play into the equations ?
