Q:My Benchtop planer is cutting very rough on one side consistently. it acts as if the knifes are dull. However I have changed the knives 3 times and know that is not the case. one side works very well while the other side is super rough. someone said that it may be the bearings . how do I check and what do I do? also I may like to upgrage to a segmented cutting head how does that play into the equations ?
A:Without examining it I can't be positive, but 99% suspect that it is a failed bearing on the rough cutting side. If it is a ball bearing remove, clean it in solvent and work it with two hands, one on the ID and one on the OD races. It should rotate absolutely smoothly given the ultra high RPM's of the spindle that are necessary to enable these lightweight planers to work well. You can also compare it to the opposite side if in doubt. A replacement part is likely available at a local auto parts store from part numbers stamped in the sides.
