  • 18V Ni-Cd Slide Battery (2-Pack)

    Q:

An answer to an earlier question said that the FS18bx battery was compatible with the HPB18/HPB18-OPE
battery. The HPB18 battery has 2 prongs and the FS18bx has 3 prongs. Will the FS18bx work with my B&D
pole saw and weedeater/edger even though the HPB18-OPE battery came with them? Also, what about charging; can both batteries be charged by the same charger?

      A:

      Nancy,
It depends on the charger you have. The basic charger (black, about an inch and a half square, with no LED) should be disconnected after about 12 to 18 hours. I think that it charges all the time and may shorten the life of your battery if always left on while plugged in.
The step-up charger is about the same size, but has an LED light that changes color or goes off when the battery is fully charged. That is the one I like to use and I generally take it off the battery when it shows charged just to be conservative.
The top-of-the-line battery charger is much bigger and has several features. I cannot speak to that one because I have never used it.
I do keep all my batteries charged up all the time (except when using them). I believe they last longer and will work better if not sitting around discharged. It is easy to do, just pay attention and unplug them when charged (or after 18 hours on the charger).
I hope this information is helpful!

Yes, although it is not the best idea to leave Ni-Cd batteries sitting on a charger for an extended amount of time.

I have used an 18V B&D battery (2 came with my B&D blower) with my B&D weed eater (24V batt came with it ) for several years. The sales rep at the B&D outlet store said it was no problem. He also said the 18V batt would not last as long as the 24V in the weed trimmer-he was correct about that.

The run time will probably be fairly similar. The life of the battery may or not be better than your previous batteries. The life of a battery varies based on working conditions, the amount of times you recharge the battery and the weather conditions within your region
